A Shady Character

Walking downtown at night may make you feel a bit uneasy.  Perhaps a shady character will attempt to mug you.  Hearing stories of criminal activity and bad things happening to others causes us to become skeptical of people that may fit into these negatives stereotypes.  The Creepy Carl Story examines the narrow viewpoint our society has about strangers.

  1. Tanya, These images are ones that I can relate to emotionally. Your use of black and white is very effective, providing a focal point. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

  2. Nice work! Even being a dude, the first one gives me the creeps. Kind of a serial killer vibe. Whether or not you stick with the more comical tone or go a bit more serious, I can see this project being pretty fun!

  3. Please talk and shoot from your experience. The "narrow viewpoint our society has about strangers" is too ambiguous. You assume that there is a commonly held and shared veiwpont, and I don't think that is necessarily true.

  4. In this case, I wholeheartedly agree with Karen. When you were talking in class about your experience at the bank and how YOU felt wondering if there was a "shady character lurking nearby," I started thinking that this series might not really be about the character at all, but rather about your own anxieties related to strangers - or what could happen if your fears/stereotypes/imaginings were actually true. How can you convey that psychological state through your imagery?

  5. I almost feel like these images are too up close and personal with the shady character. If there is that amount of fear/anxiety around shady characters you would not be getting this close. Although the first one looks as if you're just walking down the street and see him peering around the corner. There is a certain sense of calm but uneasiness in his stare.

  7. I think the figure is most successful when we can not identify him. When we don't know who he is he is more threatening.
